Junior clubs: help us develop tomorrow’s umpires

The future of hockey depends on more than developing talented players. We also need to develop the next generation of umpires.

Across South Central, our junior sections are full of young people who have the enthusiasm, knowledge and passion to become excellent umpires. Giving them the opportunity to develop their skills now will help ensure that our sport continues to thrive for many years to come.

Clubs have a vital role to play

We are asking all junior clubs across South Central to consider how they can encourage and support young players who may be interested in umpiring.

Whether they are just starting out, looking to gain confidence or already showing an interest in taking their umpiring further, we want to help them on that journey.

South Central Hockey is here to support clubs.

If your club would like advice, guidance or support with developing young umpires, please contact Sophie Parker, who will be able to discuss the opportunities available and help your club develop a pathway for its young officials.

Why develop young umpires?

Umpiring provides young people with much more than an opportunity to officiate a match. It can help develop:

  • Confidence and communication skills
  • Leadership and decision-making
  • A deeper understanding of the game
  • The ability to manage challenging situations
  • A sense of responsibility and teamwork
  • A pathway to progress within hockey

For some, umpiring will become a lifelong involvement in the sport, opening doors to higher levels of competition and new opportunities.

The future of our sport depends on all of us

Without new umpires coming through, clubs cannot run matches, leagues cannot operate and players cannot enjoy the game they love.

We need to invest in umpiring talent today to protect the future of hockey tomorrow.

South Central Hockey is committed to working with clubs to encourage and develop young officials, and we will support this effort wherever we can.

Ready to get started?

If your junior section has young players who might be interested in umpiring — or if your club wants to strengthen its own umpire development programme — please get in touch with Sophie Parker.

Together, we can develop the next generation of South Central umpires.
