The FIH has published the Rules of Hockey 2026. The document covers the playing rules, umpiring guidance, and field and equipment specifications for outdoor hockey.

What has changed?
The FIH highlights several updates in this edition:
- Aerial balls: Once the intended receiver has touched the ball, an opponent may approach and challenge, provided the receiver was initially given five metres of space to receive it safely.
- Too many players on the field: If this materially affects the match, the team captain must receive a yellow card.
- Match timing: The rules specify a 10-minute half-time interval and stopping time and play after a goal, subject to applicable competition regulations and permitted agreements between teams.
- Contact with an umpire: If the ball strikes an umpire or an unauthorised person and gives one team an advantage, play restarts with a bully.
- Penalty corner protection: The rules clarify when defenders may play the ball while still wearing protective equipment and the penalties for throwing that equipment dangerously.
