Understanding Talentopia – England Hockey’s New Talent System
England Hockey’s traditional Player Pathway has now evolved into a new approach known as Talentopia — a modern talent system designed to be more flexible, inclusive, and player-centred.
Rather than following a rigid, structured route, Talentopia has been created to allow multiple entry, exit, and re-entry points throughout an individual’s hockey development journey. This reflects the understanding that every player develops differently and at their own pace.
A Player-Centred Approach
Talentopia places the player firmly at the centre of talent development. The aim is to move away from a system that was often viewed as a filtering process and instead create environments where more players can thrive, develop, and continue to enjoy the game.
The system is built around a collection of interconnected environments, each playing an important role in supporting young players throughout their development. These environments work together to provide a broader and more supportive experience for players, helping more individuals discover and fulfil their potential.
Collectively, coaches, clubs, schools, counties, and talent environments all share responsibility for nurturing and raising standards within the game to strengthen both the breadth and depth of the hockey talent pool.
Multiple Routes Through the System
Although Talentopia is often shown in a linear diagram, the reality is that the environments are highly connected and flexible. Progression depends on the needs and development of the individual player rather than a fixed route.
For example, players may gain access to a Talent Academy (TA) following a coach nomination from:
- Their school
- Their club
- Junior county hockey environments
In addition, players can also be openly nominated by coaches directly into assessment opportunities for England Age Group (EAG) trials during the spring cycle.
England Hockey believes that for most high-potential players, the Talent Academy environment is the principal development setting for 15–18-year-olds. The TA programme is expected to play a significant role in preparing players for progression into the EAG programme and eventually the elite domestic game.
To further support player development, additional assessment opportunities will also be available for players already operating within Talent Academy environments during each cycle.
Talent Academy and Progression Opportunities
Within the Talent Academy environment, players may be identified and put forward by:
- Talent Academy Head Coaches
- England Age Group coaches
- Scouts throughout the cycle
- TA end-of-cycle competitions
Players who are no longer age eligible for the England Age Group programme may also be nominated by TA or EAG coaches and scouts into the Great Britain Elite Development Programme (GB EDP) assessment process.
England Hockey scouts play a key role in identifying high-potential players who demonstrate the qualities required to transition successfully into the EAG or GB EDP programmes.
A Connected Development Environment
Talentopia recognises that player development is rarely straightforward. By creating a system of connected environments with multiple routes and opportunities, England Hockey aims to better meet the needs of young players and support long-term development.
While embedding this collaborative approach across the game will take time, the ambition is clear: to ensure that every environment works together with the best interests of the player at heart.
Talent Academies are expected to play a leading role in helping this vision become a reality and setting the standard for future player development across the sport.
