Umpires play a vital role in delivering safe, fair, and enjoyable hockey across the South Central area. Their commitment ensures that every match is played in the right spirit, with consistency, respect, and integrity at the heart of the game.

The Role of the Umpire

Our umpires are responsible for:

  • Applying the rules of hockey with accuracy and consistency
  • Supporting a safe and respectful playing environment
  • Managing the game to ensure fairness for all participants
  • Contributing to the overall enjoyment and flow of each matchWe are proud to support umpires at all stages of their development, from new officials starting out to experienced umpires officiating at the highest levels of the game.

Match Appointments

Appointments are carefully managed to ensure that all fixtures are covered appropriately and that umpires are allocated to matches suited to their experience and development needs.

  • Each umpire is appointed to a number of matches across the season
  • Appointments are made with consideration of availability, location, and level of play
  • Development opportunities are built into appointments to support progression
  • Clubs are expected to support the appointment process and respect allocated officials 

Number of Matches 


The number of matches an umpire is appointed to will vary depending on:

  • Availability submitted by the umpire
  • Level of qualification and experience
  • League requirements and fixture demands
  • Development and assessment opportunities. We aim to ensure a fair and balanced distribution of appointments, giving all umpires the opportunity to contribute regularly while maintaining high standards across all competitions.

During the 2025 -26 season, a total of 3,528 umpire appointments have been fulfilled across a wide range of competitions, reflecting both the scale of hockey in the region and the dedication of our officials.
