Breaking Down Barriers: Wycombe Hockey’s Journey to Inclusive Sport
At Wycombe Hockey Club, we’re committed to creating opportunities for all children to get involved in hockey, especially those who might not otherwise have access to the sport. We believe every child should have the chance to play hockey. To support this mission, we recently ran a free 8-week community hockey programme specifically designed for KS1 and KS2 children, giving kids aged 4 to 12 the opportunity to experience the sport, many for the very first time.
The programme was initiated and led by Jane Clarke, supported by a team of Wycombe Hockey players who generously volunteered their time to coach and support the young participants.
The programme attracted 60 children, who, after completing the course, enjoyed developing their skills, participating in game play, and most importantly, having fun on the pitch.
Sessions included a mix of drills, game play, and fun activities designed to build skills and keep children engaged. By offering the programme free of charge, we removed financial and social barriers that might have prevented some children from taking part.
In addition, Wycombe Hockey employs a community coach who regularly visits local schools. These visits bring hockey directly into PE lessons and after-school clubs, ensuring even more children across the area can experience the sport.
Looking ahead, with the support of South Central Hockey, we are excited to build on this momentum and continue expanding our community programmes — fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where every child can play hockey.
